Thanks for stopping by and wasting the next five minutes of your life reading this, (HaHa)!
My name is Stuart Harrison and I grew up in Alabama. I originally raced from 1980 through 1991 and then retired as a B-Pro with two blown out shoulders and a desire to finish college and get on with life. In 1994 after starting my new job and being bored to death because I had no one to hang out with, I tracked down my old Phase II cruiser and bought it back from the guy I sold it too six years earlier (when I switched to 20" only). Then started racing the Alabama State series in 1994. Surprisingly, I still had some friends doing the same thing, so we all met at the races and it was just like old times.
I ended up taking the State Number 1 for the class and moved to Tampa, FL two weeks later for a new job. I put the bike up for several months and then got bored in Tampa, so I searched out the one true passion in my life, BMX. I raced some during the next two years, as my job kept me pretty busy, but at age 25, the only rider I had to race was a 17 year old kid who was major fast. It stopped being fun to go to the races and I started playing Ice hockey, by 1996 I was retired again. After a few years I was offered a job back in Alabama which I could not refuse, so I moved back.
Then one week after the 9-11 tragedy in 2001, a guy I raced with back in 1986 called me out of the blue. Said that he had gotten back in to racing and was going to our old home track to hit a local and that I had to come down and race. I explained that I had not ridden a bike in 6 years but he talked me into it. I drove down, the track was exactly like I remembered it as 19 year old, when I left for college, and I could ride it blind folded. It all came back instantly and I even pedaled over the first roller, on the second lap of practice, something the locals did not even do. The gate dropped with my buddy (who had been training for six months) and I was on his bottom bracket entering the first turn. It freaked him out. Needless to say, I am still racing and he has moved to road bikes. I hit about ten locals a year to qualify for the state championship and have gone State #5, #3, and #1 since.
In 2004 I rode up to the NBL Grands with a friend and caught the national bug again. I raced the 2005 Grands, the first Grands I have actually raced since 1988, and earned a national number. The great thing about racing now is hanging out with my teammates. I am riding for a team made up of guys I raced with or rode with back in the mid eighties, TEAM MOTO FILLER, and to be honest we have several guys in the top twenty in their class, I am not one of them.
A few years back, being a graphic designer by trade, I was making number plates for myself, when everybody started telling me to sell them. So, "HRPdesigns Custom BMX Number Plates" was born in late 2003. It helps to pay for my racing and bike parts, and that is all I could hope for. Thanks to everyone who has taken a chance on my plates. I hope to continue in the sport for year and years, as I really like all the people I get to meet and race with at every event.
Okay so it was really too long. Thanks for making it to the end...
Stuart Harrison, HRPdesigns
